In The Works - Convergence (Exhibition)
Convergence will showcase spoken word poetry in association with other forms of expressive art over the course of the exhibition. Each week will highlight a different collaboration with music, visual art, dance and video. The aim is to demonstrate the centrality of the word to expressive art and to show the public the many different ways spoken word can be utilized to deliver powerful messages about the world around us.
Convergence is also about how the artists are brought together for the project through networking and collaboration from all artistic backgrounds and locations.
Features of the Exhibit
The exhibition will include paintings, photography, live performance (with dance, poetry and music), projection video and other innovative means of sharing art, such as:
• Viewfinders with poetry on circular slides, where visitors can read poetry, see images of visual art and photography, and otherwise access spoken word expressions;
• A display that shows different ways of displaying text as it evolved through time (depictions of language), titled From Chaucer to Chingy;
• An audio-visual display with vignettes about moments in spoken word history; and
• A video display of a series of photos of expressive poems projected onto a backdrop with audio of the poem playing in sync to the movements, among many others.
The main expository displays of visual art, video and visual displays of poetry would remain constant throughout the duration of the show, with specific aspects of the exhibition rotating based upon the associated art form highlighted each week. A live performance will also be part of the weekly focus, with a line-up of spoken word artists appearing with dancers, musicians, videographers, painters, graffiti artists, DJs, MCs and other creators throughout the month.
